You may have heard loveable funny-man Lenny Henry mention Dudley a few times. He’s very proud of his hometown and has never lost touch with his Black Country roots, but there’s more reasons than Len’s love of the area for discovering what Dudley has to offer.
It may not be the first place that springs to mind when you’re looking for a great family holiday, but for history, heritage and loads of fun too – you won’t go far wrong booking a trip to deepest darkest Dudley! In fact, we’re pretty sure you’ll be surprised at what this region – right in the heart of England – has to offer.
Although it’s slap-bang in the middle of an urban area, there are oases of beauty with gorgeous canals and nature reserves, fascinating (and award-winning) museums, and a stunning castle with adjoining zoo too. Three of their top attractions have just been awarded TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for 2014 – for gaining consistently excellent reviews.
We’re really pleased to see that Dudley council is focusing more on their tourist message with a new-look ‘Discover Dudley’ website and blog – we think it looks great and are sure this will help entice people to visit.
There’s plenty to engage the family audience for a week away, with the Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, Dudley Zoological Gardens and Castle, Dudley Canal Trust Trips, the Stourbridge Glass Quarter and more. They all run special weekend activities and events in school holidays which are now easily searchable on the new Discover Dudley site.
If you’re the outdoorsy types, you can ‘Go Wild’ at Wren’s Nest Nature Reserve – or check out the outdoor activities like bat walks, stories around the campfire and fairy days for families to join in, if you plan and book in advance, at the parks and green spaces.
Keep your eyes peeled for special deals at the two main hotels in the area – The Village Hotel and Copthorne Hotel – who often run family deals combining accommodation with attraction tickets at very reasonable prices, like this one, run at The Village throughout June.
