"I BEEN here loads of times," Harry said as we pulled up at Williamson Park in Lancaster. And he was right, he has. In fact, he first went there before he was even born when me (heavily pregnant) and my husband, David took a trip to the aviary because we'd noticed the baby reacted to birdsong. (And a finch landed on David's finger.)
The next time, Harry was a chubby six month-old who we introduced to the Butterfly House and laughed as, eyes wide, he watched the bright wings swooping around our heads.
When Harry was three, there was a family festival with a bubble machine, bouncy castle and burgers. When he was four, we finally made it inside the Ashton Memorial (commissioned by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife), where Harry brought the house down by sitting on a throne-like chair and announcing, "I'm a big Queen!"
We've been in all four seasons, admiring the blossoms and the turning leaves. We've sat on the grass eating ice-cream and snuggled in the cafe slurping down hot chocolate. We've seen weddings at the memorial, a heron at the lake and a rainbow in the fountain.
It's big enough that it never feels over-crowded, but not so big that you feel isolated.
Yep, we've been loads of times. And we'll be going loads more.
